    And Good News

    - Sachin moves to No.19
    - Sehwag, Harbhajan in top 10
    - Sourav up two places to 23

Sachin Tendulkar, after becoming the highest run-getter in Test cricket, has catapulted back among the top 20 Test batsmen in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday. Before the second Test against Australia, he had slipped to 24th spot in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, his lowest position in 15 years. However, the 35-year-old’s heroics in Mohali has seen him break back into the top 20 at 19th place.

It is another reason for the Mumbai man to celebrate after becoming the highest scoring Test batsman in history during that match, overtaking the record of 11,953 runs set by West Indies’ Brian Lara.

Indian southpaw Sourav Ganguly, who hit a century in the first innings of the second Test, improved two places to 23rd, while Virender Sehwag’s good show with the bat saw him move into the top 10.

However, lacklustre performances by Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman saw them lose ground in the latest rankings.

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, who scored just seven runs in the match, slipped one place to fifth, while teammate Michael Hussey was dethroned from his No.1 perch to third place.

His place was taken by West Indies stalwart and ICC Cricketer of the Year Shivnarine Chanderpaul with Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka moving up to the second spot.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori’s match-winning innings of 55 not out and 76 in two innings in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong earned him five places and a spot at 31st. Vettori’s recent nine-wicket haul has placed him in 14th position on the bowling ladder, up by seven places, while he holds the second position among allrounders.

Other big movers include Gautam Gambhir, who moved up eight positions to 29th place after his innings of 67 and 104, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni progressed seven places to 37th.

Among bowlers, Harbhajan Singh spun his way into the top 10 list, taking over the reins of India’s highest-ranked bowler from Zaheer Khan, who slipped one place to 12th while Ishant Sharma’s exploits with the new ball shot him eight spots up to 31st position.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old leg-spinner Amit Mishra’s seven-wicket haul againt Australia has earned him a berth at No.50. It was also a productive match for Mitchell Johnson, who gained three places to be 30th on the list.

Sachin Tendulkar, on the verge of becoming the highest run-scorer in Tests, slipped further in the ICC rankings for batsmen, dropping a spot to 24th, according to an ICC media release on Tuesday.

Tendulkar is just 15 runs away from breaking Brian Lara’s world record of 11,953 Test runs.

    V. V. S Laxman (14th) was the lone Indian batsman to move up while Virender Sehwag (11th) and Rahul Dravid (18th) slip.

Australia’s Michael Hussey returned to the top after scoring 177 in the drawn Bangalore Test against India, including a 146 in the first innings.

Hussey was placed third before this match, behind Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka and Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting stayed fourth despite scoring his maiden Test century in India.

Opener Matthew Hayden slipped two places. He now lies in the ninth spot with Aussie vice-captain Michael Clarke further back in the 15th position.

In the bowling charts, Zaheer Khan, Man of the Match in the Bangalore Test, gained seven places and is now 11th in the rankings.

India skipper Anil Kumble lost eight places, plummeting from the 10th position to 18th. The India captain bowled 51 overs in Bangalore without picking up a wicket.

Pacer Ishant Sharma gained a place to be 40th. Among the allrounders, Brett Lee moved up one place to seventh.

Sachin drops to lowest ranking in 15 years

    .

India's master batsman Sachin Tendulkar has dropped to his lowest ranking in 15 years in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen after a disappointing series against Sri Lanka which concluded in Colombo on Monday.

Tendulkar, who started the series in the 13th position, finished in 23rd place after scoring 95 runs at 15.83. He drops six places after scores of six and 14 in the third and final Test which Sri Lanka won by eight wickets to clinch the series 2-1.

It is his lowest ranking since late 1992 after spending over 15 years in the top 20 apart from a very brief spell at the end of 2006.

Tendulkar, who is just 76 runs short of becoming the leading run-getter in Test cricket history, last occupied the top batting position six years ago after the 2002 Headingley Test in England.

Tendulkar’s drop is the only bad news for India batting as others have made good upward progress.

Virender Sehwag has become the highest-ranked Indian batsman after returning to the top 10 for the first time since March 2006. Sehwag, who scored an impressive 344 runs in the series, has lifted one place to 10th with Pakistan's Younus Khan firmly within his sights.

VVS Laxman, who scored 25 and 61 not out in the series decider, has climbed three places to 15th position while Rahul Dravid shares 16th place with England’s Alastair Cook. Dravid improves his position by two places after scores of 10 and 68 while Cook jumps four places following his contribution of 39 and 67 in The Oval Test.

Saurav Ganguly has improved his ranking by one place and now sits in 25th position while opener Gautam Gambhir, who was the second leading run-getter for his side with 310 runs, is in 37th place after jumping 12 places.

For Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara has just missed out on reclaiming the top slot from the West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The 30-year-old from Matale, who dropped to fifth after the second Test in Galle, has jumped to second position after hitting a superlative 144 in Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 396.

However, a knock of just four in the second innings, when Sri Lanka were chasing 123 for victory, denied him the top place.

Reliance Mobile ICC Test Player Rankings for Test batsman

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has replaced Kumar Sangakkara from the the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Player Rankings for Test batsman. The Sri Lankan lost his spot on the top after he was dismissed cheaply in the first Test against India in Colombo last week.

Chanderpaul now leads the batting rankings for the first time in his career. The Guyanese player averaged 91 in the past 12 months but still ended up on the losing side in five out of eight Tests against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Australia.

However, the points difference between the two southpaws is small and Sangakkara can regain his top spot if he performs well with the bat against India in the second Test which begins on Thursday in Galle.

In fact, Sri Lanka's thumping win by an innings and 239 runs in Colombo in which the Lankans scored 600 runs has ensured there is a major reshuffle in the rankings. Four of the six Lankan batsmen scored centuries which meant Mahela Jayawardene (6th), Tillakaratne Dilshan (29th), Thilan Samaraweera (37th) and Malinda Warnapur (48th) have gone up in their rankings.

There is no good news for India in the batting list except VVS Laxman has improved his position by three places and is now in 18th spot.

Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 27 and 12, has slipped one place to 15th but still remains India’s highest-ranked batsman. Rahul Dravid has dropped three places to 19th while Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly have dropped out of the top 20.

Sehwag has slipped three places to 21st position while Ganguly now sits in 24th place after dropping four spots.
