Roddick started off well clinching the first set 5-7 but fell back to lose the next two sets in tie-breaks 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) as Federer held off the gritty American.
Then in the following set, Roddick came back well to win the fourth set to lead 6-3 and took the game to the fifth set. Finally Federer beat the American 16-14 to win the Wimbledon title.
In the semi-final, Federer beat Robin Soderling 7-6, 7-3, 7-5, 6-3 to set a date with the history, while Andy Roddick beat Andy Murray 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/5).
